Healthier condiment choices

healthy condiment choices

Veggie burger + mayo = what’s the point of having the veggie burger anyhow?

When ordering a veggie burger, ask for no condiments so that you can control what is added to the burger.

Typically, I use mustard because of low sugar and oil content. But, if ever you have access to salsa or hot sauce, grab it! Lower salt, sugar and oil in these condiment choices.

Restaurant Review: Picante – California

picanteI love Mexican restaurants that have friendly staff, clean facilities, lots of tortilla chips and salsas. And the big 5 gallon bucket of pickled jalapenos and carrots just make my heart sing! But I really love Mexican restaurants that have vegan dishes on the menu. Picante’s Veggie Butternut Squash #burrito is flavorful with right amount of spice and plentiful! Totally ordering this dish again. Butternutsquash, rice, pinto beans, pico de gallo salsa, grilled bellpeppers and onions wrapped up in a tomato tortilla… Delish! I’ll see you at the table!

Recipe: Curried Quinoa

curried quinoaIngredients:
1 cup quinoa, cooked
1/4 cup yellow onion, diced
1/2 yellow bell pepper, diced
2 clove garlic, diced
1 teaspoon curry powder
1/4 cup craisins
1/4 cup raw cashews Lemon

Directions: Cook quinoa per package instructions. In another pan, water sautee garlic, onion, and bell pepper for 5 minutes. Add all ingredients to quinoa and mix through. Turn off heat, leave covered for 5 minutes. Squeeze juice of half of lemon over the quinoa and serve immediately. Great with veggies, like roasted Brussels sprouts.

Making granola healthier

granola

I love granola and am always looking for ways to make it healthier.

For a quick and easy way to add more omega to your granola, sprinkle on one teaspoon chia and one tablespoon raw sunflower seeds. Good for your brain and you’ll love the extra texture too!

Good morning to you and yours!

Restaurant Review: Rye SLC

rye slcFirst time, so I tried a variety of dishes. Appetizers of Garlic Fries and Truffle Mac & Cheese. I love garlic, but after starting with the Garlic Fries, everything else tasted like garlic. So if there was any truffle oil on the Mac & Cheese, I couldn’t taste it, but it was creamy-lovelyness. I liked the option to add bacon or spinach – the fresh spinach was stirred in just before bringing to the table and added a nice layer of texture. Main course was pho-like Noodle Soup. Aromatic enough to combat the garlic attack on my taste buds, but I think their garnish was wimpy with very little cilantro and Thai basil. Some people love fatty ppork and I’m sure it added flavor, but no thank you! Industrial, simple decor made for an easy environment that was comfortable for a casual business lunch. The service was slow, but nice and easy going. Overall, it was a good experience, but I’d still recommend Oasis Cafe (located just one block north) over RyeSLC – any day of the week.

Interview with Hala Saleh of NomNomFinder App

Has this ever happened to you?

I was stopped at a red light and a group of food trucks catch my eye on the corner. Bummer! I already ate lunch and that burrito-yumminess-food-truck looked awesome! I wish I had known that these food trucks were just down the street… I would’ve gone there for lunch instead!

Interestingly enough NomNomFinder App founder, Hala Saleh, has had the same challenges about not knowing where local food trucks are located. So, what did she do about it? She went to Startup Weekend Provo, put together a team, and NomNom Finder is well on it’s way to being created.

I love when people fill a need for connecting people to good healthy food. Not saying that all food trucks are healthy food, but often these one-off mobile restaurants are much healthier than many other fast food options. Thank you, Hala, for following your “gut” on this one and working to create cool new app! (OK, that was pretty cheesy, but I couldn’t help myself!)

Check out my interview with Hala about her interest in healthy food and desire to connect food truck operators with their hungry customers.
